The Blue Lagos Sustainability Initiative, in collaboration with Uriel Construction Limited, has commenced the construction of five solar-powered boreholes to improve access to clean and reliable water in underserved riverine communities across Lagos State.
The intervention forms part of the initiative’s broader community development efforts, which recently extended to Badagry Local Government Area through a multi-sectoral medical and humanitarian outreach at Ebute Ajagun, Iworo, and neighbouring communities. The five borehole projects are sponsored by the KOH PBAT Campaign Team and implemented through Uriel Construction Limited, reinforcing efforts to address essential community needs and improve the quality of life of residents in the beneficiary areas.
The initiatives underscore Blue Lagos’ commitment to promoting inclusive and sustainable development by addressing critical challenges affecting coastal and riverine communities, particularly limited access to healthcare, safe drinking water, economic opportunities, and waterway safety.
The five solar-powered borehole projects are sponsored by the Koh Pbat Campaign Team through Uriel Construction Limited, demonstrating their commitment to supporting community development and improving access to essential infrastructure in underserved riverine areas of Lagos State. The projects are expected to provide more reliable access to water for domestic use, improve sanitation and public health, and enhance the overall well-being of beneficiary communities.
Multi-Sectoral Medical and Humanitarian Outreach in Badagry
The Badagry outreach featured free medical services sponsored by the Medical & Safety Directorate of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors (RHA), distribution of food palliatives donated by the Humanitarian Affairs Directorate of the RHA, fish-smoking kilns donated by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Dr Oreoluwa Finnih, and life jackets donated by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) under the leadership of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel.
Held at Ebute Ajagun, Iworo, the outreach brought essential healthcare services and humanitarian support closer to residents of Badagry’s riverine communities of Daddy Louis, Ajido, Etesa, Epe and Ebute Eleja, many of whom face geographical and infrastructural barriers to accessing basic services.
Through the programme, residents benefited from free medical consultations and healthcare support, food assistance, livelihood support through the provision of fish-smoking kilns, and life jackets to promote safer transportation and fishing activities along Lagos waterways.
The donation of life jackets reinforces ongoing efforts to improve waterway safety among residents who depend on boats and other forms of water transportation for their daily activities.
Speaking on the intervention, the Team Lead of Blue Lagos, Mr Saheed Adesanya, reaffirmed the initiative’s commitment to ensuring that residents of underserved coastal and riverine communities are not excluded from development opportunities because of their geographical location.
He explained that the Badagry outreach builds on previous interventions carried out in communities including Sagbonkodji, Bishop Kodji, Takwa Bay and Ilado-Odo in Amuwo-Odofin, as well as Yegunda, Ito Omu, Isan, Oko-Abe, Ito Osun, Saga, Emina and Take Nla in Epe, among other locations.
According to him, Blue Lagos adopts a community-centred approach that combines immediate humanitarian assistance with practical interventions aimed at improving public health, strengthening livelihoods, enhancing waterway safety and supporting long-term community development.
Five Solar-Powered Borehole Projects Commence in Riverine Communities
In a complementary effort to address infrastructure gaps and improve access to safe water, Blue Lagos, in partnership with Uriel Construction Limited, has commenced the construction of five solar-powered borehole projects across selected riverine communities in four local government areas of Lagos State.
The PBAT-KOH Campaign Team is sponsoring all five projects through Uriel Construction Limited, and they are strategically located to address water-access challenges in underserved communities.
The beneficiary communities are:
Seje Jegba, Badagry Local Government Area
Sagbonkodji, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area
Olomometa, Ojo Local Government Area
Agadangba, Ward C1, Epe Local Government Area
Igbo Apawa, Ward D1, Epe Local Government Area
The projects are designed to improve access to water for domestic use, reduce the burden on residents who face difficulties obtaining safe water, and contribute to better sanitation, public health and household welfare.
The use of solar-powered systems is intended to support a more sustainable approach to water provision by reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources. This is particularly relevant to riverine communities where infrastructure challenges can affect the availability and reliability of essential services.
Access to safe water remains a fundamental development need, with implications for health, hygiene, education, household productivity and the overall quality of life. By commencing these five projects, Blue Lagos and Uriel Construction Limited are extending development efforts beyond immediate humanitarian relief to include community infrastructure capable of delivering long-term benefits.
Strategic Partnerships Driving Community Development
Blue Lagos expresses profound appreciation to its Patron, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, for his support and strategic engagement in advancing the initiative’s community development objectives.
The initiative particularly acknowledges the contribution of the Lagos State Waterways Authority under his leadership for donating life jackets to improve safety among residents who depend on Lagos waterways.
Blue Lagos also appreciates the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals, Dr Oreoluwa Finnih, for sponsoring the medical outreach and donating fish-smoking kilns to support local livelihoods.
Special recognition is extended to the Humanitarian Affairs Directorate of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, under the leadership of Ms Bisola Olusanya, for donating the food palliatives distributed during the Badagry outreach and other community interventions.
Blue Lagos further acknowledges the Koh Pbat Campaign Team, who sponsored the five solar-powered borehole projects through Uriel Construction Limited, a significant contribution towards improving access to essential water infrastructure in underserved riverine communities across Lagos State.
The initiative recognises the important role of corporate organisations, government institutions, humanitarian organisations, development partners and community stakeholders in facilitating interventions that address the needs of underserved populations.
Blue Lagos calls for sustained collaboration among government agencies, corporate organisations, development partners, community leaders and other stakeholders to expand access to healthcare, safe water, livelihood opportunities and waterway safety interventions across Lagos State.
As the initiative continues to expand its reach across Badagry, Amuwo-Odofin, Ojo, Epe and other riverine areas, its guiding principle remains unwavering: No Community Is Left Behind.
