Ijede Local Council Development Area on Tuesday joined the Lagos State Government in commemorating the 2026 Lagos State Tree Planting Day with a renewed call on residents to embrace environmental sustainability by planting and nurturing trees.

The event, held at the General Hospital, Ijede, was themed “Trees for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility,” and brought together government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, students, community stakeholders and residents.

Delivering the keynote address of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the Vice Chairman of Ijede LCDA, Hon. Abdulkabir Femi, said the annual campaign underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to tackling climate change, reducing flooding and creating healthier communities through increased green spaces.

The Governor disclosed that Lagos State had planted 13,401 trees, representing 67 per cent of its 20,000-tree target for 2026, adding that the planting campaign would continue throughout the rainy season to exceed the target.

He urged residents, local governments, schools, corporate organisations and community groups to not only plant trees but also nurture and protect them to maturity.

Representing the Executive Chairman of Ijede LCDA, Princess Motunrayo Gbadebo-Alogba, the Vice Chairman reaffirmed the council’s commitment to environmental conservation and climate resilience.

He described tree planting as one of the most effective and affordable solutions to climate change, noting that trees improve air quality, reduce erosion, beautify communities and promote healthier living.

He urged residents to take ownership of the trees planted and make environmental protection a continuous civic responsibility.

Representing the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mrs. Popoola of LASPARK said the annual campaign reflects the state’s determination to strengthen climate resilience through collective action.

She highlighted the environmental and economic benefits of tree planting, including cleaner air, flood control, biodiversity conservation and improved public health.

She also noted that the trees planted under the programme are geo-tagged and monitored to ensure their survival, while encouraging all stakeholders to support the state’s greening initiative.

Leader of the Legislative Arm, Hon. Kehinde Basirat, also stressed the importance of trees to human survival and called for collective efforts in protecting the environment.

Several stakeholders commended the Lagos State Government for sustaining the annual exercise and stressed the importance of tree planting.

Alhaji Jamiu “Golden Jay” appreciated the state government, Ijede LCDA, students and dignitaries for supporting the initiative.

The Odofin of Ijede urged residents to cultivate the habit of planting trees, describing them as effective tools for preventing erosion and improving the environment.

The Lisa of Egbin noted that the programme has been sustained over the years because of its numerous environmental benefits, including providing shade and natural ventilation.

Alhaji Fahm encouraged residents to create spaces within their surroundings for trees, while Council Manager, Engr. Olusegun Orelesi, highlighted the role of trees in reducing the impact of storms and improving environmental sanitation.

The APC Chairman in Ijede advised residents against indiscriminate felling of trees, emphasising their importance to human existence.

Chief Imam of Oke-Eletu, Alhaji Soyiga, recalled how trees have historically provided shelter and helped protect buildings from environmental hazards, urging residents to preserve them.

Baale Madan also expressed support for the initiative and encouraged greater community participation.

Speaking on the significance of the exercise, the Head of Environment, Mrs. Olorunsola Olajumoke, described tree planting as an investment in future generations, calling on individuals, schools, corporate organisations and community groups to actively participate in creating a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Supervisor for Environment, Hon. Fashola Opeyemi, who appreciated the Lagos State Government, stakeholders and participants for supporting the annual tree planting campaign and urged residents to continue protecting and nurturing trees for the benefit of future generations.
