Kosofe Local Government has joined other local government areas across Lagos State to commemorate the 2026 Lagos State Annual Tree Planting Day, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience.

The event, held under the theme “Trees for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility,” highlighted the importance of collective action in protecting the environment through tree planting and promoting a greener, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.

Speaking at the exercise, the Executive Chairman of Kosofe Local Government, Barr. Moyosore Ogunlewe, urged residents to embrace tree planting as a practical way of safeguarding the environment and securing a healthier future for generations to come. He stressed that environmental sustainability requires the active participation of everyone, noting that government efforts alone cannot adequately address the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation.

According to the chairman, planting and nurturing trees contributes significantly to cleaner air, flood control, improved biodiversity, and the creation of a more resilient environment. He encouraged residents to make tree planting a regular habit, describing every tree planted as a lasting investment in the future of Kosofe and Lagos State.

Also speaking, the Supervisor for Environment, Mr. Adekoya Moses, called on schools, religious institutions, market associations, youth groups, and community organisations to sustain environmental conservation efforts by making tree planting a continuous practice rather than a one-off exercise.

The tree planting exercise attracted officials from the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), including Mr. Olaoye Adeniyi, Assistant Director, Scientific, as well as Supervisory Councillors, the Director of Environmental Services, Mrs. Abijo Nurat, other council officials, representatives of Community Development Committees (CDCs) and Community Development Associations (CDAs), community leaders, market men and women, and other stakeholders who participated in support of the state’s environmental sustainability initiative.

The exercise reinforced Kosofe Local Government’s commitment to supporting the Lagos State Government’s vision of building a greener and more environmentally sustainable state, while encouraging residents to play their part in protecting the environment for future generations.
