The National Female Students Association of Nigeria (NFSAN), Lagos State Chapter, has sought collaboration with the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) to create more opportunities for female students interested in the maritime sector.

The delegation, led by the Vice Chairperson of NFSAN Lagos State Chapter, Comr. Adelaja Azanat Abosede, paid a familiarisation and partnership visit to LASWA, where they were received by Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Blue Economy and General Manager of LASWA.

During the engagement, NFSAN introduced its Lagos State Chapter and explored areas of mutual partnership that could support the academic and professional development of female students across the state.

The association particularly advocated for female students in maritime-related fields to be considered for internship opportunities within LASWA whenever relevant vacancies or opportunities become available. The agency assured the delegation that female students would be considered where spaces exist.

NFSAN also requested approval to organise an educational and exposure visit for female student delegates from tertiary institutions across Lagos State to LASWA facilities. The request was granted, providing the students with an opportunity to learn about waterways management, the maritime sector and career opportunities within the industry.

As part of its upcoming activities, NFSAN Lagos State will commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11 across selected secondary schools in Lagos State. The initiative will focus on celebrating and empowering female students through the distribution of school essentials, alongside sensitisation on menstrual hygiene and reproductive health awareness.

LASWA has expressed its willingness to support the initiative, further strengthening the partnership between both organisations.

The visit is expected to provide a platform for continued collaboration between NFSAN Lagos State and LASWA in creating opportunities for female students to learn, connect, develop and explore careers in the maritime sector.
